Do you worry about your toilet leaking? A toilet can leak in many places. A toilet that has water pooling around its base can indicate that the wax ring may be leaking or that there is a crack in the tank. If the toilet runs often, it is usually due to a leak in the tank or the bowl.
Are you ready to inspect your toilet for leaks? In just four steps, we'll show you how to do this.
In 4 Steps, Check Your Toilets for Leakage
STEP 1. Take off the toilet tank lid - First, remove the tank lid from your bathroom. The lid is on top of your toilet. It should be easy to remove. One hand should be on each side of your toilet lid. Then, lift it gently off. Place it on the ground nearby.
STEP 2. You can check the water level of the tank by removing the lid. A line inside the toilet tank should indicate the optimal water level. On the toilet's back wall or side, you will see a line that indicates the water level. Adjusting the fill valve will allow you to adjust the water level in the tank if it is higher or lower than this line.
STEP 3. Conduct the food colour test - You will need food colouring bottles to conduct the test. It doesn't matter what colour dye you use. Add 15-20 drops to the water tank and let it change colour. Wait 30 minutes.
STEP 4. The bowl should be checked for colour after 30 minutes. If the dye has made its way into the toilet bowl, there may be a leak at your flapper or a crack in the overflow tube. This will need to be fixed.
How to Fix A Leaking Toilet
A minor leak may not require you to hire a plumber.
These are some steps to troubleshoot:
- The flapper should be checked - A defective flapper could cause a stream of water to continue flowing into the tank. To prevent leaks, make sure the flapper is sealed correctly.
- Tighten the bolts. If your toilet leaks from the base, tighten the bolts. To tighten the bolts, remove the plastic covers on the tee bolts. This could compress the toilet drain outlet, restoring the seal.
- Replace the wax rings - If tightening bolts does not resolve the base leak, the wax rings may need to be replaced. This involves completely removing and reinstalling the toilet.
